Let's Talk Recruitment!
For all the Moms, Aunts, Grandmas, and alumnae who may have been away for a while, what used to be "Rush" is now called "Recruitment", and the ladies who will be participating in Recruitment to choose their new Sorority home are now called "Potential New Members" or "PNMs". The process is essentially the same, but the lingo has changed a little.
Prior to Recruitment...
Sorority life provides members with an opportunity to participate in leadership experiences, intramural sport teams, and social activities (e.g. dinners, dances, and parents weekends). A sorority provides opportunities to make lifelong friendships through an unbreakable bond often referred to as "Sisterhood". As a sorority member, you will have countless memorable experiences you will cherish for life, and the decisions you make during recruitment will allow you to find your perfect home where you can enjoy all the wonderful experiences Greek life has to offer.
Recruitment is a five-day process where women get to know each of the seven sorority "houses" or chapters on the UH campus. Each fall semester, you, as a PNM will have the opportunity to visit each house. During each visit you will meet active members of each chapter who will provide more information and show you around the house. Through this mutual selection process each PNM learns the ideals and activities of each chapter including their philanthropy, sisterhood, and social events.
Recruitment is a an amazingly fun process and the best way to get a sense of every chapter on your campus. Despite the excitement, the fast-paced schedule and busy days can be draining for even the most socially extroverted of us, so it's important to remember to take care of yourself throughout the process and keep your perspective so you can make the best decision for yourself. With that in mind, here are some of our favorite tips for making the most of your formal recruitment experience:
Talk to your Rho Gamma
These women are here for you to help you through the process and offer their guidance so you can make the best choice for you. Be open with them about what you're thinking so they can talk you through the many decisions you'll have to make.
Remember...the best choice is different for every woman participating in Recruitment
Maintain sensitivity in the way you speak about the chapters you visit. Every woman you speak with is having their own unique experience and their perspective on a chapter may be very different from your own, It's important to respect these differences and not discourage someone from making the best decision for themselves.
This also goes for you, legacies! Don't misunderstand, we cherish our legacy members and the family relationships strengthened by those additional bonds established through shared sorority memberships are unlike anything else; however, the chapter that may have been the best fit for your Mom, Aunt, or Grandmother, may not necessarily be the one for you, which brings us to our next tip...
Tune out the noise
You'll hear a lot of different opinions as you go through this process, but the best way to find the sorority that's perfect for you is to trust your intuition.
Stay at the top of your game
While it's close to impossible to put your best foot forward in every moment of the process, make sure to stay rested and hydrated, eat well, and give yourself time to recharge. This will help you be at your best so you can get the most out of your recruitment experience.
